Donde se gestan mis Navidades/ Where my Christmases brew
Christmas is for me a matter of gathering. There's no other meaning in that holiday for me. Well,... there's another, and it is the one related to getting back to certain odours and sounds and lights and places in my childhood. And this has accentuated due to the birth of my Curupezno, since a third meaning (and yet I denied the existence of this excess of meaning) also exists: the one of actually feeling a child, yearning for presents, staring the tinsel garlands (the ones I grumbled before Curupezno came to life), taking delight on the smell of food, getting intoxicated by the smell of watermelon and being lulled, for ever, by the sound of cicadas. And feeling, for a moment, a little girl again, far away from any tribulation.
When we were kid, my father used to take vacations from his job by the Christmas holidays. Sometimes we would pack our bags and spend a whole month with my grandparents on my mother's side, in that place full of fantasy and horrible ghosts, called Capioví, right there on the picture above. Right there lived my grandparents and still survives a big part of their descendants.. The house is a different one and was built by my grandpa, just as the previous one, which collapsed by the action of a tree that fell on the roof on a stormy night. The light of the petromax lantern would turn on the magic of the nights, since electricity had not yet arrived to that remote spot.
When we would not go to my grandparents on my mother's side, we would spend Christmas with my aunt Isabel and uncle Filisberto. With them lived my grandparents on my father's side. We used to live half a block away from them. At their home there would always be a great deal of food and friends visiting. Right there, in the spot you can see behind them in the second picture. There were some improvised fireworks exploded on the streets, and of all of them I would fascinated by the stars that poured from fiery steel wool the kids revolved in the air, like they wer human wheels of fire. As a background music, Mr Gallardo, the neighbour, would entertain us with his record player, fixed in one only album, from which I recall Navidad de flor de coco, Navidad del Paraguay.
